A government spokesman told CNN that Latvia would enter a four-week lockdown on Monday after a sharp rise in new corona virus cases in the coming weeks.

In Latvia, 357 new cases were reported on Friday. The total number of infections was 7,476. The country has recorded 95 deaths since the outbreak.

The vast majority of cases in the country were reported last month. As of October 1, only 1,945 cases had been reported in Latvia.

From Monday, social interaction is discouraged. Only indoor gatherings of more than 10 people from more than two homes are allowed. Restaurants will only allow take-outs, while stores will limit the number of people inside at the same time.

Other restrictions include distance learning for high school students and professional, vocational and higher education institutions, while low-level schools remain open. Only stores that sell groceries, medicines, and pet food are allowed to stay open on weekends and holidays.

All public events, including concerts and theatrical performances, are prohibited. Museums, libraries and bookstores will remain open under strict security measures.
