Glasgow City 0-0 Piemont United
(Glasgow won 6-5 on penalties)
Piamont United were knocked out of the Champions League after a 5-4 defeat to Glasgow City on penalties after a proud clash on the part of James O’Callaghan.
Ain O Gorman and Joe Love missed penalties before defender Lorraine O’Callaghan saw her spot spot escape in a sudden death, meaning Glasgow advanced to the second qualifying round.
Peamount gave the game a really encouraging start, putting Glasgow under a lot of pressure and creating opportunities at every opportunity.
Eleanor Ryan-Doyle had two early chances in the first five minutes. First, she quickly touched a Becky Watkins corner and swiped the crossbar before swinging a shot into the ever-rising target.
Moments later she scored thanks to her captain O’Gormann for passing the ball accurately, but she was unable to reach the goal.
Eight minutes later, Glasgow City slowly began to grow into the game, following a close scare from Iof Colville. McLaughlin whipped in a mocking cross for a call-up that was not enough to bother Niam Reid-Burke despite receiving a light touch on the ball.
When Sam Kerr and Lauren Wade investigated in midfield, Glasgow’s intensity rose slightly. They tried to open the Peamount defense. Wade did exactly that as he found Kirsty Howat in the box into the busy box of busy players. Howard received a touch of words in the crossbar but it widened the width of the post.
The first real test for Reid-Burke was on the 25-minute clock when Striker Howet moved to the goal before the Pimount goalkeeper opened a shot that had been safely collected.
The Pemount in the face of Glasgow players on all sides of the pitch made their home uncomfortable. Although Glasgow enjoyed a lot of the ball in the first half, Raid-Burke enjoyed 45 minutes of calm in their final product before the goal.
At the end of the first half, Howat and Kerr had more chances, but Claire Walsh’s two time-bound tackles ensured that the sides were level at intervals.
Claire Shine was not featured, but early in the second half Glasgow introduced the Republic of Ireland international Tyler Talent.
Howatt started the second half just as the first half ended, with her powerful shot bouncing around the post from rescue again from Reed-Burke.
Alexander was kicked out of the next post by a cheek free kick from Ain O Gorman, but she recovered to escape Watkins’ foot following the shot.
Pammont midfielder Lucy McCartan has a powerful strike from a distance Alexander complains in the palm of his hand as the last ten minutes of the game pass to Glasgow instead of Myread Fulton smashing the deadlock almost to the home side. Coleville played a ball well into her path but Raid-Burke cut it quickly.
With only moments left to go in injury time, Howat thought he had won it for Glasgow, but the remarkable Reid-Burke stood tall again and sent the game into extra time.
In the first minute of extra time the pima count had to take the lead, another trademark away from McCarton was pulled out by Ping Alexander, who pulled the ball over the top of the bar.
Fulton once again went on to open the scoring with a ulaha trade, but Reid-Burke collected once more, and Clock won a full-time penalty.
In the shootout, Piamount captain O Gorman missed his third penalty with a shot against Alexander. Reid-Burke pulled out an amazing save from Love’s shot and sent the shootout to a sudden death.
Glasgow converted their next two penalties, but Lorraine O’Callaghan saw her shot saved by Alexander, scoring small margins to a home next round.
When it comes to dust, Peamount will take great confidence from their performance against a fully professional team after a proud performance for the Women’s National League.
