Cypriot Club Mick McCarthy was then elected manager of Nicosia

Mick McCarthy is set to take over as Cyprus’ first manager after his second contract with Ireland expires in April.

Nicosia then confirmed that 61-year-old McCarthy was on his way to Cyprus to discuss filling the club’s hot seat.

Former Wolves, Sunderland and Ipswich boss will face table topper Apollon Limassol in tomorrow’s league clash.

McCarthy left the Ireland setup after postponing the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Slovakia due to Kovid-19, paving the way for Stephen Kenny to take over the senior hot seat.

In 2012, Apoel lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals and are the reigning domestic champions.

But the club’s fortunes have waned this season. Apoel won only two of the first seven games of the 14-team league, finishing 10th.

Manager Marinos Zounidis was sacked earlier this week after losing to Sloan Liberac in the Europa League playoffs.

Before taking over the Republic, McCarthy controlled Millwall, who in 1996 succeeded Jack Charlton and finally led Ireland to the 2002 World Cup.

He returned to club management the same year before handling Wolves and Ipswich, taking over at Sunderland and then returning to the Ireland Hotspot in November 2018, succeeding Martin O’Neill.

Kenny’s contract was to finish with McCarthy on July 1 and finish on July 31.

But when the Slovakia play-off was postponed for a second time in April, McCarthy agreed to pave the way for Kenny ahead of schedule.

After leaving Ireland for a second time, McCarthy is co-commentator on Sky Sports about Kenny’s first career in charge at international level.
