Prince Azim of Brunei, who had a short career as a Hollywood filmmaker, has died. He was 38 years old.
The son of the wealthy Sultan of Brunei and the fourth on the throne died Saturday in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. As is usual in Muslim countries, his funeral soon took place on Saturday as well.
The government announced this on national radio. It says the country has now entered a seven – day mourning period and the population should dress accordingly.
Local media reported that he had been ill for some time but no cause of death had been given.
Azimin is a London – based production company based in Daryl Prince Productions. His Hollywood credits include “You’re Not You” starring Hilary Swank in 2014 as Azim Bolkiah and “The Happy Prince” starring Rupert Everett in 2018. The prince and company are associated with an untitled film project about the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow.
Azim was often seen among Pamela Anderson, Janet Jackson and Maria Carey as a high profile figure in the international party.
The Sultanate has recently drawn strong international criticism for arguing that the ruler should punish criminals who are subject to Muslim Sharia law, but particularly brutal in the West.
Neighboring Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed his condolences on Facebook. “My condolences to the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam and his Royal Highness Sergei Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on the death of the Royal Prince Dudu Yang Mulia Paduk Seri Pengiran M. Azim. Pray for Seri Baginda to be strong and may Allah have mercy on the souls of the dead.
