Foden saves Manchester City from a West Ham draw

LONDON: Pep Guardiola has conceded he will not be able to recover from Manchester City’s recession after Phil Foden left the bench to escape a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

In the first half at London Stadium, Guardiola’s side fell behind on a super overhead kick from Michael Antonio.

Foden arrived at half-time and created an instant draw, but City were unable to retaliate with a knockout, having now won just one of their last four Premier League games.

Without the injured City, Fernandinho, Aymeric Laport, Nathan Ake and Gabriel Jesus, the growing list of rare displays has rarely been in form.

Despite having beaten Arsenal and Porto in the last two games, City do not seem to have fully recovered from their 5-2 defeat to Leicester in September.

They are five points behind leaders Everton, who play Southampton on Sunday. They are more vulnerable than any time since Guardiola took charge of his first season.

“I am not a person who can predict the future. We have already given up seven points, which is a lot, ”Guardiola said.

“We struggled in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the first half. We put out a great performance in the second half.

“We had the chances we needed to win the game, but unfortunately we could not score again.

“It simply came to our notice then. We need to take things in stride and try not focus too much on the problem. ”

Along with Guardiola’s problems, City boss told Sergio Aguero that he had “muscle injuries” and did not know how long his star striker would be sidelined.

Aguero has not scored in a top flight since January and is notorious for returning to his best form after injury.

Months after his knee surgery, Foden replaced Argentina.

Tricky trips to Marseille and Sheffield United next week will give a further test of how determined City are to regain the all-winning form they led to the title in 2018 and 2019.

It was another encouraging result for West Ham, scoring three goals in the final 10 minutes of their final game, trailing 3-0 at Tottenham.

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick in City’s 5-0 win over West Ham last season. His penetrating run gave Aguero an early chance and the shot deflected wide.

Guardiola named a lineup that has not changed in consecutive games for the first time since October 2017, but City are still out of tune so they fell behind to Antonio’s magical moment in the 18th minute.

Antonio made a leap into the City area, blocking Ruben Dias before breaking a superb overhead kick past Ederson for the third goal of the season.

The 20-year-old scored his third goal of the season in the 51st minute.

Joao Concelo blasted a shot to the left and headed for West Ham, where Foden controlled and turned with a move, past Lucas Fabianski and running a low shot.

With 22 minutes left, Guardiola introduced Kevin de Bruyne, who lost the muscle problem that had beaten Arsenal and Porto.

De Bruyne’s pin point pass gave Sterling a golden chance to win for City in the 86th minute, but a poor touch by the forward and a relentless shot allowed Fabianski to save.

Guardiola shook his head and was even more disappointed when Riyad Mahrez’s shot bounced off the Fabianski post.
