Paul Scholes has been named Salford City’s caretaker manager following the club’s sacking of Abraham Alexander on Monday.
Salford finished unbeaten and fifth in the top five League Two games, leaving Alexander, who was appointed in May 2018, out of automatic promotion places following two wins and three draws.
A statement from the club said: “Salford City have announced that manager Abraham Alexander will leave the club with immediate effect. The club met with Abraham this morning and, after discussion, agreed with the part company. The club would like to thank Abraham for his contribution and all his hard work. In his first season he led the team to Wembley, as a result of which he was promoted to League Two, and in his second season to the EFL Trophy Final. I wish him all the best and success in the future. First team coach Chris Laketti will also leave the club.
Paul Scholes will serve as interim head coach, while the club will confirm a new manager. [Reserve team manager] Warren Joyce, who is currently isolated, will join Paul [as assistant] Once he is done. ”
Collectively manage
Along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicki Butt, Gary and Phil Neville, Scholes is one of six “Class of 92” owners who jointly control 60% of Salford, while the rest are held by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim.
The 45-year-old Oldham has managed seven games in the spring of 2019, winning one, drawing three and losing three before resigning 31 days later. Scholes claimed he left because he did not allow the control guaranteed by owner Abdullah Lemsagam.
“In the short time since I took on this role, it has unfortunately become clear that I can not act as I intended and have been led to believe,” he said at the time.
