Police detain armed gentleman around Robert E. Lee monument in Virginia

Protesters in Washington DC toppled the statue of Confederate common Albert Pike on Friday, according to reporting from CNN affiliate WJLA.

The statue stood in the city’s Judiciary Square neighborhood.

A video confirmed the monument teetering with yellow ropes tied all around it in advance of it hit the floor at all around 11.15 p.m. ET.

Minutes later on the statue was found lying in the grass, burning and protected in graffiti. Protesters appeared to choose turns including things to the fireplace as the statue burned.

“It is just about a indication of equalism, now we’re finding again our liberty and our legal rights, symbolizing folks you know, stand for us, stand for our culture, not stand for issues that been passed in The us that’s been considered as hateful,” 1 protester at the scene informed WJLA.

Law enforcement officers had been at the scene but did not attempt to arrest any of the protesters.

CNN has reached out to the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia for comment. 

Donald Trump sharply criticized the DC police above the demonstration.

“The D.C. Police are not carrying out their occupation as they view a statue be ripped down & burn off,” the US president wrote on Twitter.

“These persons need to be instantly arrested. A shame to our Country!”

Pike was the Confederate Indian commissioner and military commander of Indian Territory all through the US Civil War, according to the Oklahoma Historical Culture.
