Waseda University, Keio University, Sophia University, and Tokyo University of Science are some of the most difficult private universities in the Tokyo metropolitan area. How has the popularity and ranking of the so-called “Souke Jori” top universities changed in the last five years? In # 2 of the special feature “University 2022 Drama Change Order / Entrance Examination / Employment” (total 24 times), the latest data of “W pass entrance rate” showing that the university should be chosen as the destination when the two schools have been approved, compare and read. Then, a certain “power” moved Souki’s order. (By Takahiro Takeda, Editor-in-Chief of Diamond Editorial Department, Akiko Yamade)
“Abnormality” in Keio and Waseda Ranks
“A certain force” is in the background
As the birth rate declines and the number of applicants declines, more and more universities begin reforms to attract the students they need. The most obvious indicator of a university’s “rank” is the deviation value, but there are cases where changes that were not seen a few years ago are hidden behind the deviation value. So, I want to look at the changes happening nowadays by comparing the entrance exams of 2018 and 2010.
Here we will read the popularity from the “double (W) admission rate” data, which shows which one is chosen as the admission destination by students accepted by both universities. The higher the admission rate, the more popular and selective the university.
Of particular note is the “Waseda-Keyo Match”. Looking at 2018 and 2010, comparing the W pass enrollment rate of the entire university, Waseda University was 28.5% and Keio University was 71.5% in 2018, Keio University was overwhelmingly successful. However, Waseda University is gradually making progress, and the difference narrows to Waseda University 35.1% in 2009, Keio University 64.9%, and Waseda University 39.9% in 2010, and Keio University 60.1%.
Both schools have almost the same level of variation, but why does this variation occur? Let’s look at that soon, including competition with Sophia University and Tokyo University of Science. It can be seen that the change in the order of “Souki Jori” is due to the force of “a certain force”.
