The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. in a tunnel near the coastal city of Hualien. The eight-car train was traveling from Taipei to the southeastern city of Taitung with 350 passengers on board, rescue workers said.

The accident coincides with the start of the annual Grave Sweep Festival, a long festive weekend that fills the country’s roads and railways.

Taiwan’s Eastern Railway is a major tourist attraction because of its east coast. It passes through many tunnels and bridges, through mountains and canyons before descending through the Huadong Valley.
