A girl was killed in what seems to be a shark assault although swimming off the coast of Maine on Monday, officials explained.
She was wading off the shore of Bailey Island all-around 3:30 p.m. when a witness noticed her being attacked by what seemed like a shark, Maine Maritime Patrol explained.
A pair of kayakers aided her get to shore, and an ambulance presented additional help, but she was pronounced useless at the scene, the authorities said.
The swimmer’s identify was not produced, pending notification of her loved ones.
The incident would be only the 2nd recorded unprovoked shark attack in the condition, the Portland Push Herald described.
“Shark interactions with individuals are very unusual in Maine,” New England shark expert James Sulikowski explained to the newspaper.
“My guess is that the individual was mistaken as a food items item.”
