Wolfgang Schäuble criticizes Germany's Russia policy

The CDU politician has been a member of the Bundestag for half a century. He talks about his experiences in an interview with Handelsblatt.

Berlin From his desk, Wolfgang Schäuble looks at souvenirs of his political activities. A photo of black-clad men forming a zero hangs on the wall in his Bundestag office. A farewell gift by officials of the Federal Ministry of Finance to their former minister who set the standard with a debt-free budget. Below is a caricature of Schäuble as President of the Bundestag ensuring silence in the plenary hall with a bell in his hand.

Schäuble was elected to the Bundestag on 19 November 1972 and has been a member of parliament without interruption since then. Half a century during which the CDU politician was head of the chancellery, interior minister, finance minister and finally president of the Bundestag. But the current crisis scares the 80-year-old. Schäuble says in an interview with Handelsblatt that he has never experienced a situation as threatening as he is now.
