In total, according to the eWRC, the Fiesta WRC made a total of 3,147 starts at 1,349 rally events and had a total of 475 wins – that is, almost every third rally. In addition, a Fiesta WRC set the fastest time on 3,757 special stages. Rallies to date and won 13 of them. This car is currently in use in Northern Ireland and Scotland. The No. 40 Fiesta WRC saw the world’s smallest vehicle: Alexei Lukyanuk completely demolished this new car during a pre-test for a Finland rally in 2015.
Fiesta WRC Chassis 29: With Sideways Roll, first to submarine and then to finish
The most bizarre event in Fiesta WRC rally history is undoubtedly the PX61 AYK with English registration. In 2012, Peter Solberg / Chris Patterson celebrated its premiere rally in Mexico as a sports instrument. Later, Joho Hanninan, Elphin Evans, and Henning Solberg also grabbed his steering wheel. However, at the 2015 World Cup Rally, the chassis No. 29 gained popularity at the hands of the Ottanak / Rigo Molders in Mexico: they slid their car on the special stage of “Los Mexicanos”, rolled to the side of a beautiful roll and sank to a depth of six meters. For M-Sport, this disaster alone was not a reason to give up – after all, the turbulent pool was unsalted inland water, which could cause irreparable damage. After a good eleven hours at the bottom of the lake, the Fiesta was lifted to shore and dried up. At the service park, long-lasting mechanics were handed over to the entire drive train, including the gearbox, turbocharger and cooling system. The wiring harness, fuel tank and all fuel lines had to be replaced after manual washing. The engine itself requires special attention, because, according to the rules, it must actually remain. In the interior, the seats and many other details received intensive hair dryer treatment, while the cell phones of team chef Tänak and Mölders were dipped in rice – this removes moisture from the equipment. Hard to believe: the passenger’s phone worked again later!
This also applies to the Fiesta WRC with chassis number 29: at the end of the three-hour maintenance period allowed, the PX61 AYK rolled into its own park firm, thus returning to competition. However, on Saturday morning, the water-filled sensor confirmed that the car did not want to start after refueling. The mechanics took action again and the resumption was postponed to Sunday. But then the car returned to the race and finished the rally – despite wasting time – finishing 22nd overall. As they ran down the target ramp, Tan and Molders showed off their humor and wore diving masks and snorkels for fun. The later world champion lost his nickname: “Titanac” …
The Fiesta WRC with chassis number 29 continued its rally career. In the same year he competed in the World Cups in Argentina, Finland and Corsica, and since 2017 he has competed mainly in events in Great Britain and Ireland. In 2020 he found his way to Barbados, where he won two of the five overall victories of the year.

The new restrictions for the Rally Top Class are literally exciting
From 2022, the World Rally Championship will move to a new level, literally: electrified shores: as the successor to the World Rally cars, work teams will be sending fast-moving, especially innovative competing vehicles with hybrid drives over gravel. , Sand and asphalt tracks from the coming season. In this case, the M-Sport Ford also chose a new base device: after the Fiesta, the Puma Hybrid * will now form the basis for its participation in the World Rally Championship, which was first confirmed for the next three years.
The youth crossover model fits perfectly with the basic features of Rally Sports – many World Championships are not held and are sometimes on very rough roads. In 2021, the World Rally Championship is back on the brutal sand tracks of Kenya’s legendary “safari”. The Puma Rally 1 reflects Ford’s commitment to electrifying its product range. As early as 2026, the manufacturer intends to add a zero-emission alternative to its range by introducing fully electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid models. The complete transition to electromobility is planned for 2030.
The Ford Puma Rally 1’s hybrid system features a 3.9 kWh battery, a 1.6-liter electric generator motor, a 279 kW (380 hp) turbo four cylinder and 100 kW (136 hp) of extra output and torque. The basic technology follows the same principles as the 180 Nm base Puma EcoBoost Hybrid (MHEV): it recovers the energy wasted when the vehicle brakes or rolls. The power stored in the battery is available to an electric motor, which steps in to reduce consumption or increase performance – and provides additional views at specific stages with an excellent 100hp extra boost for a limited time.
The Puma Rally 1 and Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid also have the option of charging into an external socket. At the World Rally Championship Service Park, a 3.9 kWh battery charge takes about 25 minutes. This corresponds approximately to the duration of a typical maintenance and repair stop.
The World Rally Championship is moving towards sustainability with a new vehicle class called Rally 1. The new fuel used in the top class from 2022 is also compatible with it: it is made entirely of synthetic and bio-based input materials, so it is 100 percent sustainable.
