Electric vehicles are cars that are powered solely by electric or traction motors. Instead of using gasoline or fuel, they are powered by electricity. Since they need electricity to charge and function, electric vehicles also need EV charging stations, and EV users must be able to find these as easily as possible. How does an EV work?
An electric vehicle needs electricity to function, but where does that electricity come from? All EVs use a battery-powered engine. Depending on the vehicle, it may need to be recharged using an external source, like an EV charging station. The majority of EVs use lithium-ion batteries, which can store a larger amount of energy and have a longer lifespan than other batteries.
Besides the batteries, an EV has a charging port that allows it to connect to an external power supply, like an electric vehicle charging station. It also consists of an electric traction motor that uses the power of the traction battery pack to power the EV’s wheels while also storing the electricity the vehicle needs to operate. It also includes a cooling system, onboard chargers, and a power electronic controller.
Not so many years ago, the thought of abandoning gas-powered cars would’ve sounded insane. But today, when comparing the global sales of EVs in 2010 versus 2020, the acceleration is clear. Estimations say that by 2025, 20% of all new cars sold globally will be electric.
The carbon-neutral transportation revolution is here! And therefore, electric vehicle charging stations must be up to the challenge. As more and more EVs are sold, more EV charging stations will be needed so that every driver may find one near their workplace, home, or vacation spot.
Why choose an EV over a gas vehicle?
As you may already know by now, EVs run on electricity only. Here are the advantages EVs have over conventional gas powered vehicles:
- They are environmentally friendly. As fully electric vehicles don’t use an exhaust system, they don’t have emissions. Also, electricity from nuclear, hydro, solar, or wind power plants causes zero air pollutants.
- They are quieter. Yes, EVs are definitely quieter than gas-fueled vehicles, which contributes to less noise pollution.
- Less maintenance. An EV car motor operates smoothly and has stronger acceleration than internal combustion engines: you can say bye-bye to any repairs associated with traditional engines. Also, they don’t need oil, which means no more oil changes. All in all, they require fewer visits to the mechanic.
- Energy-efficient. Electric vehicles convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. Traditional gasoline cars convert roughly 12%–30% of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels.
As you can see, owning an EV has many benefits in comparison to having a traditional car. It won’t take many years for the majority of car sales to transition to more electric cars. Feeling skeptical? Remember before using fuel, cars were powered by petrol less than a century ago.
