In 2020, disaster cinema has a clear predictive effect. Our feature film tip for the day.
Long before virologists like Christian Drosten became heroes this year, Dustin Hoffman played one. As Colonel Sam Daniels, he faces the plague of “explosion – the silent killer.” And the parallels of the present do not end there. In the 1995 film, the virus spread from animals to humans and then spread around the world. In the “outbreak” a deadly disease from Africa leads to the small town of Cedar Creek in California. Soon the army decided to encircle a large area of the city. Together, Drs. Keefe (Rene Russo) has a fever for a cure – but the military, which secretly wants to use the virus as a biopsy, is reluctant.
At the time of publication, Wolfgang Peterson’s tragic picture was an even more horrific scenario. Today the thriller seems more disturbing, but at the same time more relevant. In addition to Hoffman and Russo, there are many other screen legends: Morgan Freeman, Donald Sutherland and Cuba Gooding Jr. are just a few of them. All this makes “Explosion – Silent Killer” a movie we should watch today.
“Explosion” tonight at 8:15 in Kabul Ains.
