A huge influx of migrants crossing the Channel by boat, combined with a real estate crisis, has left Ireland under strain on the question of immigration. Protesters against accepting migrants demonstrated in Dublin on Monday 6 May.

Until now, Ireland had a reputation for being a welcoming country to foreigners. But for the thousands of Irish people who gathered in Dublin on Monday, May 6, it's time to call it quits. “We feel crowded, occupied, we have nothing to say”, complains a performer. They object to the presence of refugees sleeping in tents on the streets of Dublin. Ireland is facing an unprecedented influx of immigrants attracted by generous reception conditions. The arrivals are drawing the ire of some, despite the housing crisis.

Welcome country

Several hotels housing asylum seekers have mysteriously burned down in recent weeks. In Ireland, where the far right is unrepresented in politics is almost unheard of. Herman Kelly, head of a young anti-immigrant and anti-European party, is expected to be the first to win seats in regional and European elections. A speech which is still unanimous in Ireland, the situation of the emigrants has often been experienced by the oldest. Ireland expects more migrants to arrive from Great Britain after a new British law was passed aimed at deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.
