The woman cut off her own hand for the insurance payout

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia: A 22-year-old woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for deliberately cutting off her hand with a circular saw to make a fake insurance claim.

The district court in Lubjana said Julija had agreed with her adulterous boyfriend to cut off her left arm above the wrist at their home in the capital in early 2019. He was found guilty in a case of attempted insurance fraud.

The court said it had signed agreements with five different insurance companies a year ago. The young woman stopped to collect more than a million euros, half of which was immediately closed, and the rest in regular monthly installments.

The boyfriend was sentenced to three years in prison and the father to one year of suspension.

The two had rushed her to the hospital as she had injured herself while cutting branches. Authorities said he left the injured hand rather than being taken to hospital to make sure the disability was permanent. But the police recovered and reconnected it.

Days before the incident, prosecutors said Adolesic’s partner had searched the Internet for information on how prosthetic hands work. They claimed that this was another evidence of deliberate intent.

During the trial, the young woman, who claimed innocence, said she had never deliberately cut off her hand.

“No one wants to be crippled,” she told the court. “My youth forest was destroyed. I lost my hand when I was 20 years old. I know how it happened. ”
