24 to 16: Only eight teams will be eliminated from the 2021 European Football Championship after the group stage. In this mode, the group winners and runners-up enter the round of 16, as well as two-thirds of the group.

In the second EM with 24 teams, few football fans are battling the mod. Over the past few decades, the number of participants has steadily increased – there are more and more teams and more games in the tournament. Until 1996, only eight teams participated in the European Championship.

The current mode with six groups of four teams ensures that not only the two best teams in a group advance to the round of 16. How will it be determined which third party groups will advance? We will explain this to you!

However, it has not been decided which third group performed best or which is the most complex group. The first, of course, is about who has the most points in the account.

If a clear decision is not possible here because several teams received the same number of points from the three group games, the goal difference is checked. The following applies: The better the yield, the higher the chances of going forward.

The number of goals scored by other parameters in accordance with UEFA rules, those who saw fewer yellow and red cards and a place in the European qualifiers – qualified for the European Championship.

Complex EM Mode – Explained using the example of the third group in 2016

To make the whole thing clear again, we show you two-thirds of the group of the European Championship 2016. The new mode ultimately made a big difference. After three draws, future European champions Portugal finished third in the group for the knockout round and then advanced to the final, where they defeated hosts France.

Group Third at EM 2016:

• Group A: Albania (3 points / goal difference: 1: 3)
• Group B: Slovakia (4 points)
• Group C: Northern Ireland (3 points / goal difference: 2-2)
• Group D: Turkey (3 points / goal difference: 2: 4)
• Group E: Ireland (4 points)
• Group F: Portugal (3 points / goal difference: 4: 4)

Countries marked with courage qualified for the 2016 knockout round. In Slovakia and Ireland it is very simple: both teams have four points each, more than the others. Two of the other four in the group have three points – Northern Ireland and Portugal, but the tie goal difference, with Albania and Turkey a negative one. That is why Northern Ireland and Portugal took the lead.

Those who finish last in their group at EM 2021 are naturally unlikely to qualify for the round of 16.
