The SA ‘Super’ teams will join the Northern Rainbow Cup in April

It was confirmed on Wednesday that South Africa’s “super” teams will play next year’s Guinness PRO14 clubs in next year’s Rainbow Cup.

Vodacom Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers will join 12 clubs from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.

Each South African team will tour Europe for three matches in the Rainbow Cup, with 12 Guinness PRO14 clubs playing in South Africa.

The Rainbow Cup begins on April 17 and ends on June 19.

“Including” super “South African teams in the Rainbow Cup is a step in a new direction for us,” said SA Rugby CEO Jury Rooks. After so much trouble and uncertainty in 2020, we can all look forward with real enthusiasm to the opportunity to return to the best international national competition. “

Roux said discussions about the long-term partnership are ongoing and will provide an update in a timely manner.

South African rugby director Razi Erasmus welcomed the new match.

“Rainbow Cup time is perfect,” he said. “This will bring our super teams back to international competition after a year of absence, and it will arrive just in time to prepare for the British and Irish Lions tour.

It will be one step above the national competition and will remind our players of the different types of rugby they can expect when the Lions come here. Our players will face many of the players who will be part of the Warren Gotland team, and it will be interesting to see how our players adapt to the challenge.

The two teams will be divided into two teams: eight Irish clubs, two South Africans, two Welsh, one Italian and one Scottish. Each team will compete against each other in the pool, with the top teams in their pool competing in the final on June 19.

“I know what our players can expect from coaching in Ireland with Munster, it will be very different from super rugby,” said Springbok coach Jacques Nineber.

“Rugby is incredibly difficult and will ask different questions of our players. It will be a very competitive competition and a real learning curve for our coaches and players.

The current Guinness PRO14 competition ends on March 27.
