The Americans who helped Carlos Ghose escape from Japan were sentenced this Monday

TOKYO – Americans Michael, Peter Taylor, father and son, former President Rhino-Nissan, Carlos GhosnThe sentence will be handed down Monday in a box of sound equipment that will help him flee Japan.

At the time, in 2019, Ghosn was out on bail pending trial in Tokyo on charges of financial fraud and was barred from leaving the country.

At a hearing earlier this month, prosecutors demanded that Michael Taylor be sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison. She said her son, Peter Taylor, faces up to two years and six months in prison.

Both have pleaded guilty to helping Gos escape to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and the shocking arrest of an executive in November 2018 on financial charges.

Michael and Peter Taylor became legal representatives of Ghose and his case, as Gose could not be approached – Lebanese citizens were not extradited. Former Nissan director Greg Kelly is also on trial in Japan.

Remember the escape of the former Renault-Nissan CEO

After spending more than a year in prison in Japan on charges of financial fraud, Ghosn boarded a bullet train to Osaka Airport on December 29, 2019. From there he boarded a private jet that flew to Istanbul, where he changed planes and flew to Beirut.

According to prosecutor Rioso Kitajima, Taylor’s actions indicate that “the ability to follow the truth is blocked.”

He points out that Ghose ‘escape has been well planned for more than half a year, and that the role of Peter Taylor was significant when Michael led the operation.

Lawyers for Taylor, who was jailed in the U.S. for 10 months before being extradited, are seeking suspension.

According to Taylor’s lawyer Kiji Isaji, Goshen was the only one behind the curtain and did all the big planning.

Understand court battle

The Taylors have been involved in court battles since helping Ghose escape. The two were taken to Japan in March after fighting a handcuffing offense. Both are being held in solitary confinement at a detention center and are being arraigned in Tokyo District Court.

The offense of seeking refuge or allowing an offender to escape is punishable by up to three years in prison in Japan. Experts say that confession, remorse and cooperation with prosecutors can lead to lesser punishment.

During an argument in late June, the two apologized to prosecutors and the Japanese judicial system. “It was a mistake to help Ghos escape,” they said.

Michael Taylor has never denied his involvement in Ghos’ escape, and even spoke in court about how he organized the organization. The role of Peter is not clear.

According to prosecutors, the money paid for Ghose ‘escape was transferred through Peter’s company, and he met with a former Renault-Nissan executive several times, both in the months before and after the escape.
