Why is a heavier blanket more beneficial for sleeping?

The claim of a link between blankets and melatonin production comes from an article published in the Journal of Sleep Research. To reach this conclusion, the researchers invited 26 volunteers to sleep in a laboratory for a few nights so that their behavior could be observed.

In said instruction, participants were required to go to bed at 10 p.m., but only turn off the lights at 11 p.m. Participants will receive either a lighter blanket or a heavier one, so the scientists will analyze melatonin production on both occasions.

Throughout the night, the scientists collected saliva every 20 minutes to map melatonin levels. From this, it was seen that volunteers wrapped in heavy blankets had an average of 32% more melatonin than those using lighter blankets.

Why does that happen?

Although a link between the heaviest blankets and the production of melatonin has been proven, scientists still don’t know exactly what’s behind this phenomenon, although it’s believed to be because heavier blankets make more sense. Comfort and safety, but that’s just a theory.

Indeed, this study is important for finding yet another way to promote the natural production of melatonin. The dissemination of data was also essential since the search for Medicines Inducing sleep as a way to overcome a lack of melatonin has recently gained traction.
