Simon Easterby has been appointed as Ireland's interim manager

Published on

The Irish Rugby Union has announced that Simon Easterby will take charge of the Clover XV on a temporary basis from December. The decision will be taken by British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell for the 2025 tour of Australia.

Simon Easterby, who is currently responsible for the Irish team's defence, will act as interim manager for a crucial period, particularly in the run-up to the 2025 Six Nations tournament and the subsequent summer tour. With his experience as a coach, Easterby has played a key role within the Irish technical staff since 2014.

A prominent interim

Simon Easterby's interim role will commence on 1 December 2024. He will be responsible for guiding the Irish national team through key competitions such as the Six Nations, the highlight of the European Nations season. He will also ensure the team's preparation for the 2025 summer tour.

Meanwhile, Andy Farrell will remain in his role until the end of Ireland's autumn tour, which includes matches against New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji and Australia. So it will be under his watch that XV du Trèfle face this final series of matches before handing over the baton to Easterby.

Continuity in team management

The appointment of Simon Easterby ensures continuity for the national team. David Humphries, Director of Performance at the Irish FA, welcomed the promotion: “This is recognition of Simon's exceptional work in the Irish technical team over the past ten years. This announcement ensures a smooth transition while maintaining continuity in the team's development. »

A former national team flanker, Easterby represented Ireland 65 times. His journey as a coach began in 2014 when he joined the technical staff of XV du Trèfle, successively as attack and then defense coach. He has been a central player in the team's recent successes, notably contributing to historic victories against the world's top teams.
