Scientists say space colonies could turn into cannibals

Published on

With all the space research going on, it is certain that man will sooner or later succeed in landing on another planet or another satellite in the Solar System. But living longer, it’s a completely different story. According to some experts in the field, it is likely that immigrants will face food shortages in the future, where they need to do more. Cannibalism.

In an interview with Metro, Charles Cockel, a professor of astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, discussed the challenges that astronauts face in their missions. He spoke specifically about attempts to colonize worlds such as Callisto, Jupiter’s moon, or Saturn’s moon Titan.

According to Kokel, if farming or ranching systems fail and food is not regularly available from the land, migrants will face serious repercussions. But if the colony in question is too far away, or if life on Earth collapses, this solution is not possible.

History is in danger of repeating itself

To reinforce the idea he wanted to tell about cannibalism, Kokel brought up its story Arctic Exploration by Sir John Franklin in 1845. The unfortunate crew members on this voyage went through cannibalism in an attempt to survive.

Kokel explained that Franklin and his associates had found a northwestern route to the Arctic. Their boats were the most sophisticated technology of the time. They also had the latest technology, canned food. In spite of everything, they went astray and turned to cannibalism.

Likely to occur in space

According to Kokel, if we send a group of astronauts to Callisto, things may go wrong and the food planting module may not be repairable. If there is no other way to survive in this situation the parties will start swallowing each other.

While this is a good pessimistic prediction, there is still a lesson to be learned from Kokal’s post. For example, residents need to test agricultural systems on the Moon and Mars in advance before moving to distant satellites.

Now, the next phase of the astronauts’ space exploration will be a return to the moon. We will have to wait a while before a possible human mission to the moons of Jupiter or Saturn. Until then, we can hope that scientists will find ways to secure food supplies to avoid space cannibalism.
