Scientist Charles Lieber faces up to 26 years in prison for lying

At the end of 2021, a court convicted one of the country’s leading scientists in the field of nanoscience for lying about its academic and economic ties with China.

Charles Lieber faces up to 26 years in prison in six cases. Two were from lying to the government and four were from tax evasion. The sentencing date has not yet been set.

Concerns about the theft of industrial secrets and the Chinese government’s attempt to recruit spies are not new. Since 2018, when President Donald Trump was in office, this great fear has already existed. So, Trump carried out a kind of scavenger hunt to force academic experts raising federal government research funds to disclose their links to Chinese institutions.

Scientist Lieber’s case was seen as an experiment in the strength of the Department of Justice’s allegations against more than 2,000, which report an atmosphere of racism and intimidation against Attorney General Merrick Garland.
