Despite a small population of less than five million, Ireland is still a country with a passion for sports.
Ball sports are especially popular in Ireland. Sports that are not well known in German-speaking countries are important. Popular sports include hurling and galley football. Rugby and soccer are very popular in Ireland. Ireland is one of the strongest nations in Europe in rugby. The Irish football team has repeatedly qualified for major international competitions
On the other hand, there are only very successful Irish runners. Sonia O’Sullivan, who won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, is one of the few exceptions.
The biggest running events in Ireland
Not surprisingly, some of Ireland’s most popular sports are held in the capital, Dublin. The Dublin Marathon is in the fall. 16,251 marathon runners successfully completed the marathon in 2018. The Dublin Marathon is without a doubt one of the most popular running events in Europe. The other popular marathons in Ireland are the Cork City Marathon, the Waterford Viking Marathon and the Dingle Marathon.
Views of Dublin
You can certainly run half the marathon distance in Ireland. In the summer you should also go to the Rock n Roll Dublin Half Marathon. You can get to know many of the sights in Dublin along the way. These include Docklands, River Liffey, Memorial Bridge, Hapenny Bridge, Guinness World Records, and Phoenix Park. The views from Dublin are guaranteed to be interesting.
In the 30,000 women’s race
The women’s mini marathon in Dublin has long been considered the largest women’s marathon in Europe. The Austrian Women’s Run has a bigger field, but the Women’s Run in Dublin is a cult event. The race has been held every year since 1983, just before the start of summer. About 30,000 women and girls will compete in the 10 km race.
