BERLIN (dpa) – German basketball players buy Olympic tickets almost at the last minute. Despite all the adversity and failure of key players, national coach Henrik Rodell’s team won the qualifying tournament at Split and is allowed to travel to Tokyo for the summer games.
Previously, teams such as football and handball players also qualified. The German Olympic team in Japan currently includes 438 athletes.
Soccer
Men – Coach Stefan Kunts’ U21 national team qualifies for victory in European Championship There is a U23 team in Tokyo, and players must be from 1997 or later. In addition, Kuntz can nominate three older players.
Women – National coach Martina Vos-Teklenberg’s team loses one of the three European starting points in the World Cup quarter-finals. As a result, the Olympics will be held without a 2016 gold medalist.
Handball
Men – The DHB won the ticket to Tokyo at the qualifying tournament in Berlin. There the team of national coach Alfred Gislason wants to fight for gold.
Women – German handball players will not be there. Eighth place in the 2019 World Cup was not enough to qualify for the Olympics. Seventh rank will suffice.
Basketball
Men’s – German basketball players qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 13 years with their final victory in the qualifying tournament in the split.
Women – Must See German Women’s National Team.

Men – German men disqualified.
Women – German women could not use their last chance in a qualifying tournament.
Hockey
Men – In November 2019, DHB men bought tickets to Tokyo. Hockey Aces won two duels against Austria in the Elimination Tournament in Manchengladbach.
Women – At the same venue, DHB women have won twice against Italy and are therefore competing in the Olympic Games.
Volleyball
Men’s – George Grosser’s team loses Olympic ticket just before the finish line. Volleyball players have no chance against France (0: 3) in the final of the qualifying tournament in Berlin.
The women – coached by Felix Kozlovsky – also played in the final of the Elimination Tournament in the Netherlands – but lost to Turkey. As happened in Rio de Janeiro five years ago, neither national volleyball team is missing from the Olympics. German women last participated in 2004.
Beach-volleyball
Men / Women – The German Volleyball Association has nominated only three teams. Women’s places were given to Carla Borgher / Julia Sood (Dസെsseldorf) and Margaret Kozuch / Laura Ludwig (Hamburg). For men, vice-world champions Julius Thol / Clemens Wickler (Hamburg) will play for medals in Japan. Another ticket for the men was denied to the German teams.
Water polo
Men – German water polo players were allowed to attend the Olympic qualifiers in Rotterdam but lost one ticket there. Water polo legend Hagen Stamm’s tenure as national coach also ended with a disappointing performance.
Women – The German women finished last in the European Championships, thus missing the starting point for a qualifying tournament.
Baseball / Softball
Men / Baseball – DBV Men did not compete in the Olympics. They did not make the top five in the EM in Bonn, so they missed out on qualifying for Tokyo.
Women / Softball – The DBV softball team is not going to Tokyo. The team could not buy tickets for the Olympic qualifying tournament.
Rugby
Men & Women – Both teams lost in the elimination. Men advance to Ireland in quarterfinals, women in preliminary round.
