Orlando Magic did not allow their cards to look until the end.
Paulo Banchero is the first choice of this year’s NBA Draft to be held Thursday night in Brooklyn, New York.
There has been speculation for weeks as to whether Orlando will bring Jabari Smith (Auburn) or Chet Hongren (Gonsaga) into their franchise as their first choice, but Banjero will ultimately be selected.
The 19-year-old was emotional after the election: “Honestly, I can not believe what happened here.”
The fourth first choice of magic
Played for the Duke’s Blue Devils at 7-ft-1 Power Forward College and now follows the big footsteps with Magic. This is the fourth first pick in the team’s history, and in 1992 Orlando used their first pick for a Shackley O’Neill.
Chris Webber joined the Florida team in 1993, and Orlando used his last first choice for Dwight Howard in 2004.
Homegren and Smith, who are trading high, finished second and third, respectively. Homegrown goes to Oklahoma City Thunder, and Smith ends up on Houston rockets.
Disappointment for Brazhkovic
Unfortunately, Austrian basketball hopeful Luka Brajkovic goes empty-handed. Worrellberger, who worked for Davidson Wildcats in college, guessed with a choice in the second round.
Ultimately, Brazhkovic is not on the list of 58 lucky ones, leaving only the only Austrian Jacob Polt to be selected in an NBA draft.
In 2016, the Toronto Raptors selected Viennese with a ninth choice, and the center has been playing for the San Antonio Spurs since 2018. Will be back in Polt for Austria in a week.
In the European Championship qualifiers, the 2.16m giant Austrian jersey will be worn for the first time since 2017 during the games against Ireland and Cyprus in Salzburg on June 30 and July 3.
