NASA has an orbit around the asteroid Bennu, about 200 million miles from Earth, and will conduct a live broadcast next week to collect a sample from its surface.

Osiris-Rex (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) was developed to improve our understanding of asteroid impact potential and to study how planets and life in the universe began. After a two-year journey through deep space, Bennu’s surface orbit was studied in detail after arriving in 2018 in preparation for a historic mission. If successful, the crater will crash into the asteroid and collect a 2.1 ounce sample, which will return to our planet in 2023.

“Ben contains materials from the early solar system that may have contained molecular precursors for life and the Earth’s oceans,” NASA said. Announcement of live stream Detailed. “The asteroid is the tallest building in the Empire State Building and is likely to threaten Earth by the end of the next century.

NASA’s live webcast will launch EDT on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:12 p.m. Press conferences and other social media activities will begin EDT on October 19 at 1 p.m.

The Osiris-Rex, which is 20 feet long and 10 feet high, has two asteroid systems extending to the solar panels. The first is the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSUM), a clear robotic arm with a sample head that extends to the surface to collect regolith. Second, a sample return capsule (SRC) acts as a container with a heat shield and parachutes, which will protect the asteroid regolith and allow it to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere. This is the first such mission for NASA. Is its predecessor Hayabusa Mission in Japan It returned in 2010 with an asteroid sample.

Over the past decade, NASA has worked hard on deep space missions. Most recently, the agency’s Insight Lander Progress has been made in the study of “Marsquakes” After reaching Mars in 2018. Latest Mars Rover, Perseverance, Is on the route to the red planet, which will collect a sample of its own From the surface to return to Earth on a future mission. The mission also includes the first Rotary craft experiment attempting to fly to another planet.

Another mission similar to the Osiris-Rex is NASA’s Dart (Dual Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft, which is scheduled to launch in July 2021 on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. DART It will crash into the asteroid Didymus in 2022, A European space agency will go to the asteroid in 2023 to study the effects of the event on the space object. The data collected will provide detailed analysis from DART’s live asteroid deflection experiments to help shape the planet’s defense plans.
