“John Huston – Film Artist and Free Spirit” on TV: That’s Portrait
John Huston was an adventurer and risk-averse Hollywood outsider. Born player, always looking for new challenges. As a young man he was a reporter and officer in the Mexican cavalry, later an actor; Director and hobby farmer. The documentary shows him in all the different roles in his life: an actor from the American film world, a cultivated collector, a literary lover, a horse lover, and a nature lover. His unquenchable desire for freedom became part of his epic. As a screenwriter, actor, and director, Houston was a favorite of American studios. However, he had earlier decided to live and work away from Hollywood. To many, what seemed like a dream factory, to Huston, was a place that was absolutely horrible that prevented him from dreaming. As a person and as a filmmaker, he was drawn to other boundless worlds ruled by nature. He spent most of his life in Ireland and Mexico, where he produced some of his most personal works. Early in his career in the late 1940s, Houston challenged the Hollywood tradition by choosing natural locations for filming. He took famous film stars into the woods, including Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardiner, Catherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and Richard Burton. In films such as “Misfits”, “The African Queen”, “Moby Dick”, and “The Night of the Iguana”, she experienced challenging illustrations with Huston.
