Jesus influences Manchester City’s return to victory

Gabriel Jesus made a goal-scoring comeback as Manchester City got off to a 100% start with a win over Olympiacos in the Champions League.

The Brazilian striker performed well in the match played at Etihad Stadium City.

City took the lead in the 10th minute through Ferran Torres, but Jesus, who was returning from injury, took the pressure and opportunity when he intervened.

City’s three-point lead in Group C kept the result and kept them in good stead for a place in the last 16.

It seemed like a comfortable night earlier, and with Pep Guardiola ‘s decision to rest center-back Ruben Diaz and Imerich Laport ahead of their clash with Liverpool this weekend, it looks like one of the best.

They moved fast and it was like a busy night for Olympiacos defender Pappe Abu Sisse, who cut a Phil Foden cross and blocked a Riyad Mahrez shot in the first minutes.

Kevin de Bruyne was forced to save from Jose Zoe after an error by Ruben Semedo, not surprisingly when Torres opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

The Spanish winger may have been unexpectedly dragged into the role of center forward due to injury, but he adapted wonderfully.

He looked natural again when he played one or two with De Bruyne for his third goal in several Champions League games this season and then quietly overcame side-footed Zoe.

After agreeing, Olympiacos tightened his defense but City continued to investigate. Raheem Sterling put the ball back into the net on the second try after Sa saved, but saw the flag hoisted for the offside.

Gundogan deflected a shot and Kyle Walker had a dangerous cross cut out.

It is noteworthy that from the dominant position, City slowed down after the break.

The Maddie camera got a chance when a header gave a header in a corner, and then City had a fear when Foden hit a pass across his own territory. Matthew Valbuina jumped up and should have been equal, but, fortunately Foden, exploded wide.

Yusuf L-Arabi showed excellent control to create a shooting opportunity but the Stones pulled the power out of his effort and saved Ederson.

Guardiola tried to keep his side alive by calling Jesus from the bench.

Yet Olympiacos was growing in confidence, with former Watford defender Jose Holebas overtaking Walker and dropping a shot across the goal.

De Bruyne tried to get into more of the game and Sa saved a shot before Jesus’ strike was blocked.

The time when Jesus ran into a pass from De Bruyne and hit a shot from the narrow corner to the roof of the net was no doubt replaced by nine minutes.

Olympiacos’ hopes were dashed when Cancelo finished scoring with a last-minute long-range strike.
