Ireland apologizes for pro-IRA chorus sung by footballers

The Irish Football Association has publicly apologized after the national team’s players sang a pro-IRA chorus after qualifying for the World Cup.

Irish players celebrated extensively with chants and chants following Ireland’s 1-0 win over Scotland in the Hampden Park locker room. A video posted on social media shows him singing the refrain “Oh, Up the RA”, part of the Celtic Symphony song by the Wolf Tones, recorded in 1987 to mark the centenary of the Celtic football team.

The Irish Football Association said in a statement: “The Irish Football Association and Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team Coach Vera Pau apologize for any offense caused by the song sung by the players in the Irish locker room following their victory in the qualifying play-off Women’s World Cup against Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday night”.

Coach Pauw also wanted to issue a public apology: “We apologize from the bottom of our hearts to anyone who was hurt by the content of the match after qualifying for the World Cup.”

Football star Iain O’Gorman also repeated his apology to RTÉ Sport: “We sang 100 songs that night but that’s the only one posted. We want to apologize to anyone who was offended. “
