Irish fans celebrate group stage victory over Italy: they now have a medal of merit as they can do it particularly well and peacefully
The first title of EM 2016 has already been given. It goes to the fans of the Irish and Northern Ireland national teams and deserves it well – for their friendly demeanor and peaceful celebrations.
Irish and Northern Irish fans are honored with the City of Paris’ Medal of Merit for “their behavior, fair play, enthusiasm and good attitude” at the European Football Championships in France. The announcement was made by Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Wednesday.
They have already informed the President of the Republic of Ireland, Michael de Higgins, and the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Arlene Foster, about the Medal of Merit. The fans were exemplary in their “athletic prowess”. Among other things, they recalled the good mood the Irish spread despite being knocked out in the 16th round against the French (2-1).
The Irish and Northern Irish, who are always in a good mood and happy at the party, have repeatedly attracted attention in the coming weeks through videos of fan songs and fun activities. For example, a lieutenant sang to a baby on the Irish subway or to a policeman who said, “Stand up for the French police.”

Along with “Will Griggs on Fire”, he provided the catchy tune of the Northern Irish European Championship. Northern Irish were also eliminated from the tournament. Hidalgo announced that the official medal presentation date will be announced soon. Among the top guests are nine-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal from Spain.
