Inauguration of the world’s first church with a platinum rating for green buildings

Inaugurated by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, in the Hatta area, the world’s first church to receive a platinum rating for green buildings – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4) from the American Green Building Council scored 83 points. The authority has established a church with an area of ​​1,050 square meters with more than 600 worshipers in accordance with the highest standards of environmental sustainability.

Al Thayer added: “The inauguration of the world’s first mosque to receive the platinum rating for green buildings led by green energy and environmental design in the Hatta region is part of supporting Hatta’s comprehensive, sustainable development plan to meet the social, economic and environmental development needs of the region.

The Director General of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai, Dr. Hamad Al Sheikh Ahmed Al Shaibani said, “Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department is committed to protecting the environment by supporting the United Nations Emirates and Masjid – the world’s first environmentally friendly resource for climate change.” The Platinum rating for green buildings is an indication of creating a healthy environment and achieving efficiency and meeting international sustainability standards.

He added: “The department is working with the message of a global mission to propagate and strengthen the values ​​of Islamic moderation, to develop charitable activities and to build mosques in line with the best international practices. The inauguration of the mosque is a reflection of excellence in initiatives that prioritize sustainable practices and human health.”

The church has a minaret up to 25 meters high, parking for cars and bicycles, facilities for determined people, and a “green charger” station for electric cars. The church contributes about 26.5% of the energy and 55% of the water to rationalization. The Authority used construction materials made from recycled materials in the construction of the church, and uses a highly efficient air purification system to provide a healthy and sustainable atmosphere within the church. Work is also underway to install photovoltaic solar panels to provide clean energy to the church for its water purification unit, irrigation, sanitation and other needs.
