In the heart of the Imperial Valley of California, a major agricultural area at harvest height, the fence opening is about 50 miles from the danger zone, which supplies spinach, onions, broccoli and winter vegetables to supermarkets.

“It has been proven time and time again that human traffickers do not care much about human life,” said the L-Center Regional Head of Border Patrol.
“Those who think about crossing the border illegally should stop thinking about the dangers, which often end in tragedy,” Bovino said. “Our border patrol agents and first responders are unfortunately very familiar with the disasters.”
The SUV was built to carry eight people safely, But smugglers fill vehicles with people in very unsafe conditions to maximize their profits.
Omar Watson, head of the border division of the California Highway Patrol, said the vehicle seats were removed except for the driver and front passengers.
The accident happened in an area that has become a major route for illegal immigration since the late 1990s, as more enforcement in San Diego pushed illegal immigration into more remote areas.
