Nick Silkstone, deputy chief meteorologist at the Meteorological Observatory, said: “Saturday will be a very wet day, with heavy rains across the country, followed by heavy rains on Sunday, and cold spells.”

“The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the weekend covering large parts of the country. We urge people to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and weather warnings.”

ROC Breakdown Down spokesman Rod Dennis said: “If heavy rain is not dangerous to drivers this weekend, the road conditions will be deplorable, and they need to be prepared for the combination of surface spray and gusts of wind.

“Flooding is also a possibility, so drivers should never try to drive through water unless they are sure it is shallow enough. For drivers who are unlucky enough to crash in a horrible condition, our patrol will work full time to get back on track. ”
