Go to Ireland for Halloween
Contrary to what one might think, those who were not born in America. But 2500 years ago in the ancient land of Ireland. Back then, pumpkins weren't used as lamps, turnips were. I'm putting together a new Europe 1 Travel Podcast for you, Halloween in Ireland special, to discover these little stories, legendary sites, and must-have festivals to celebrate Halloween. Like County Meath's Puka Festival, “end of summer” in Gaelic, follows in the original footsteps of the Sauvin Festival. Yes, the Celts were already wearing masks and animal skins to scare away evil spirits – when the world of the living met the world of the dead on October 31st – and then the Derry Carnival in the north of the island, my favourite!
for what
Every year, it is the largest costume parade in Europe. So festive is the location: Derry is a small fortified town with ramparts 6 meters high. It creates an absolutely magical atmosphere: a film set plays the game for 4 days. The Irish prepare their decorations and costumes for the “Parade of Horrors” weeks in advance. And you have to disguise yourself or we won't give you a drink! There are pop-up shops if you forget your skeleton on the plane! Note: EasyJet has direct flights from Paris to Derry.
Besides the parade, what are they organizing?
… all kinds of circuits, like the “Awakening the Walled City Trail” and eerie visits with the Chateau Le Fier built in an old cemetery and the House of Horrors, which you must be over 14 years old to enter. A gothic ball in an old church, screenings of scary movies, ghost hunts, fireworks, live music concerts… and watch out for very good traditional dishes like colcannon made with mashed potatoes, kale and onions… just watch out for something hidden inside.
