Urgent appeals, songs and personal messages: Actors from around the world are requesting donations for refugees from Ukraine as part of the “Stand Up for Ukraine” social media campaign on Friday.

Dozens of musicians, filmmakers and sports personalities have used the campaign to exert political pressure and seek humanitarian aid. The move comes ahead of a conference of international donors in Warsaw on Saturday convened by the Global Citizens’ Organization, the EU Commission and the Canadian government.

“The brave people of Ukraine are fighting for their freedom and for us,” the Irish band U2 wrote on Twitter, adding that rocker Bono added a song. Elton John has linked to a video from a former AIDS benefit concert in Kiev. The pop star wrote that he was deeply shocked by the suffering of the people of Ukraine.

Julian Lennon spoke of “an unimaginable tragedy” that prompted him to sing his father’s song “Imagine” in public for the first time. In one video, 59-year-old John Lennon sang an iconic song about a beautiful, more peaceful world. Former Disco queen Gloria Gainer has rewritten her hit song “I Will Survive” about the Ukraine crisis.
