– Cape Town, APR 19 – Flames spread to Table Mountain and South Cape Town in South Africa after the destruction of university buildings, with firefighters battling strong winds to contain the blaze and evacuate staff. The blaze broke out yesterday morning on the slopes of the mountain, destroying buildings and part of a library containing a special collection at the University of Cape Town (building), and hundreds of students fled.

The flames are contained in large quantities today, but firefighters are still fighting for control. Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said efforts were currently focused on the Vrudhock area and that staff had been evacuated as a precaution. “Strong winds are blowing in the direction of the flames over the fire brigade,” Plato told reporters.

The fire brigade could not be supported due to the wind. City Chief Security Officer JP Smith said the cause of the fire was being investigated and that one suspect had been arrested overnight.
