The German women’s 4x100m relay won the last event in Munich. Javelin thrower Julian Weber also fulfilled his dream at the European Championships in Munich: he threw the javelin more than anyone else. There was drama in the German men’s sprint relay.

In the final race of the athletics games in Munich, the German women’s sprint relay was chasing the crown. Alexandra Burghardt, Lisa Meyer, Gina Luckenkemper and host Rebecca Haase beat Poland (42.61) and Italy (42.84) in 42.34 seconds in front of a roaring crowd at the Olympic Stadium.

The Brits, along with Dina Asher-Smith and the French, were eliminated after a substitution error.

Weber won the javelin throw

“Julian is a competitive character – anything is possible,” Boris Obergfoll predicted earlier during the javelin thrower’s competition. The national javelin coach was right: Julian Weber outdid himself on the fourth attempt on Sunday evening (08/21/2022) and threw the javelin 87.66m.

He overtook Jakub Wadlech who was in the lead with 87.28m. In the end, the Czech could not defend much – allowing Weber to wear the European javelin throw crown. Finn Lassie Etelatalo took the bronze with 86.44m.

Finally a medal

Weber missed out on a medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and last month’s world championships in Eugene, finishing fourth.

Andreas Hoffmann was disappointed to finish 11th with less than 80m.

Drama for German sprinters in Great Britain’s win

In the 4x100m relay, which started with high expectations, the German athletes felt the drama. Even the first change didn’t work, Joshua Hartman couldn’t catch Kevin Rance’s baton. The German quartet who really wanted to run for the win were eliminated. Great Britain took the title with a championship record of 37.67 seconds ahead of France (37.94). Poland took the bronze in 38.15 seconds.

Young Meat is sixth in the high jump

Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch played an instrumental role in her medal in the high jump at her home European Championships in Munich. The 2018 EM from Berlin cleared 1.90m at the third Olympic Stadium, this time finishing sixth. Ukraine’s Jaroslava Mahuchich (1.95m) secured the gold ahead of Montenegro’s Marija Vukovic (1.95m).

The bronze went to 17-year-old Serbian Angelina Topic (1.93m), daughter of former European champion Dragutin Topic.

Spain celebrates over 800m

The men’s race over 800 meters ended Sunday evening at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. As the sprint relays prepared for a climax outside, Great Britain’s Mariano Garcia and Jake Wightman battled it out for the 800m title.

The Spaniard won EM gold ahead of Wightman and Ireland’s Mark English. Favorite Andreas Kramer from Sweden started too late and missed the connection. It did not reach higher than fourth place.

10,000 meters – three Germans among the losers

Three German runners competed in the 10,000m – but they were unable to compete for medals. Nils Voigt finished 8th, Samuel Fitwi from Eritrea 9th and Philemon Abraham 19th. The winner was Yeman Crippa from Italy who was born in Ethiopia.
