News spread around the world this week that the program had attacked the electronic arts program, which had lost 780GB of data. The stolen information includes FIFA 21 and the Frostbite game engine code.
The Frostbite game engine is used to create many games such as Battlefield and Star Wars. The only good news in this situation is that consumer data has not been harmed and no malicious activity has taken place yet, in addition to sharing screenshots as evidence of a crime.
It is now clear how this hacking was done. The hackers say the real goal was to buy cookies from EA employees for as little as $ 10. Cookies were used to allow employees to login to the Slack platform. After successfully connecting to this system, the programmers tried to contact the IT department.
Electronic Arts employees reportedly asked the hacker to request new tokens for the system, and the explanation for this request seems absurd. The actress, who pretends to be an EA employee, confirmed that she lost her phone during a party last night. After obtaining the required tokens and the login details of the EA staff, they were able to access the corporate network.
The next steps weren’t too complicated either – after connecting to the company’s network, criminals found services that allowed access to the game code. As already mentioned, a photo from this system was circulated on the Internet as evidence of a hack, which was later confirmed by representatives of the electronic arts. Of course, no user data was stored there and they were theoretically guaranteed not to leak into the online space.
Electronic Arts is currently a very busy day. Programmers are expected to seek recovery for stolen data, which is basically a very common situation. Earlier, companies like CD Project Red or Capcom found themselves in similar situations.
