It suffered to the last and last minute, with Portugal beating the Republic of Ireland (2-1) this Wednesday, in a game for Mundial 2022 qualifiers.

Defender John Egan scored in the 45th minute of the first half, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s double in the 89th, 90th and 6th minutes secured the Portuguese victory.

A historic encore for CR7, who is set to become the highest-scoring player in the service of a national team: 111, two more than the Iranian Ali Dai.

With this victory, Portugal came first in the group, with 10 points, three more than Serbia, who did not play today, and Luxembourg, who beat Azerbaijan 2-1 today, and Ireland, sixth, without a point.

European top scorer

Prior to the match against the Republic of Ireland, Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2020 European Championship Top Scorer Trophy.

The Portuguese player added this trophy to an extensive record of individual trophies, the result of five goals scored in past European goals: two against Hungary, one against Germany and two against France.

Fernando Gomez, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, presented the award on the pitch to Estadio do Algarvin.
