Wednesday was the first day of heavy rains in Mumbai, with the monsoon rising over the west coast of India.

Building collapse is common in the country during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, and heavy rains weaken the foundations of poorly constructed structures.

A three-storey building collapsed in 2019 due to heavy rains, killing 14 people in a mountainous area in the northern Indian city of Solan.

In the same year, a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai, killing 10 people.
