Pope Francis appointed Bishop Noel Trainor Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union on Saturday, November 26, at the same time raising him to the dignity of archbishop. Bishop Traynor, until now Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland, succeeds Italian Bishop Aldo Giordano, who died on 2 December 2021.
Bishop Noel Trainor was born on 25 December 1950 in Silverstream, Ireland. He was ordained a priest on 13 June 1976 in the Diocese of Clogher. Graduated with a Licentiate in Theology. On 31 March 1993, he was appointed Secretary General of the Commission of Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), based in Brussels.
He was ordained Bishop of Down and Connor on 22 February 2008 and was canonized the following 29 June. Fluent in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
An appointment appreciated by Cardinal Hollerich
The President of COMES, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich sj, welcomes the appointment. The Archbishop of Luxembourg describes it as ““He has accompanied the process of European integration in an extraordinary way. Given his long experience at COMECE, I am confident that our cooperation will be particularly strong and effective in promoting the common good in Europe. I wish him a lot of strength. May God help him in his important task.” Cardinal Hollerich adds A statement.
