Irish police said on Friday they were treating the knife attack on Chaplain Paul Murphy, in his 50s, at the entrance to Renmore Barracks on the outskirts of Galway as terrorism.
After the attack, he was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening, but his life is not in danger.
The 16-year-old teenager, whose name has not been released due to his age, was quickly subdued by soldiers, arrested at the scene and taken into police custody.
According to The Irish Times, citing police sources, the suspect has been radicalized on the internet in recent months.
Still according to the paper, the chaplain arrived in his car in front of the barracks on Thursday evening and saw the teenager coming in his direction and rolled down the window. He then stabbed him several times with a hidden knife.
Guards at the barracks fired five warning shots and used batons to control the attacker “in accordance with protocols for the protection of the armed forces,” the army said in a statement.
Chaplain Paul Murphy, who was hospitalized with serious injuries, thanked the public for their support in a message posted on Facebook on Friday.
