Vigilance. Ireland's list of 'safe countries' is set to expand as the government plans to add Brazil, Egypt, India, Malawi and Morocco on Tuesday, breakingnews.ie .

The government will consider plans to join the five nations in the Irish cabinet.

Applications for international protection from these countries will be expedited from Wednesday after an “enforcement review” by the Ministry of Justice. Applications from these countries will be expedited and processed faster than applications from other countries.

+ 10 countries are designated as safe countries of origin

Currently 10 countries are designated as safe countries of origin. These include Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and South Africa.

The introduction of accelerated processing has had a significant impact on the number of applications from these countries, with a drop of more than 50% since the introduction of these procedures in November 2022.

Since the minister added Botswana and Algeria to the list earlier this year, applications from these countries have dropped by 71% compared to Nigerian applicants by 47%, as the country with the most candidates has been fast-tracked.

The designation of a state as a safe country of origin does not mean that a claim is inadmissible or that a person waives the right to make a claim. However, the applicant still needs to prove why, and as an exception, he needs protection.

Ms. McEntee plans to continue testing which other countries can be safely assigned, or if other categories can be fast-tracked.
