Italy responded quickly. Jack Murphy, son of former Ireland Under-20 coach Ritchie, had to touch down five meters from his own line. On the ensuing sideline, Italy played perfectly, allowing winger Lorenzo Elletri to find the space he needed to score. Martino Pucciriello scored to give Italy the lead.

Soon after, the Italians increased the pressure with a deep attack from the second half which caused the Irish defense to crumble.

But Ireland found their rhythm. Luke Murphy recovered a crucial ball at a ruck to give his side the lead again. Evan O'Connell capitalized on a poorly negotiated Italian touch to score a third try.
