In Ireland, Facebook’s parent company Meta was fined €265 million for not adequately protecting users’ data. Facebook’s European headquarters are in Ireland, so it was up to the Irish regulator to lead the investigation. The American giant will now have to follow a series of corrective measures.

It’s a blow to the company, which has laid off more than 11,000 people to cope with lower revenues and tougher competition in the sector.

The fine comes from Ireland, but the investigation, which began a year and a half ago, has its origins in the EU. In 2019, the information of more than 530 million users in more than 100 countries was hacked.

Facebook search, Messenger and Instagram apps are concerned, especially this tool that lets you find friends by importing contacts from your phone.

This hacked data was later published on a hacker forum. Using powerful software, they looted Facebook profiles, shared names, residences and some email addresses.

Has Meta complied with European regulations and done everything to prevent this data from ending up in the wild? So the answer is no. Several violations were observed.

Metta is regularly targeted by regulators around the world. This latest sanction brings the total amount of European fines to almost one billion euros.
