H&M, Microsoft, Nestlé and 200 other companies want to put pressure on governments

Major companies such as Ikea and Microsoft called on governments on Saturday to honor their commitments in the fight against climate change.

Bayer, EDF, H&M, Ikea, Microsoft, Nestlé, Saint-Gobain, Unilever, Volvo… This Saturday 200 companies launched a call, some of them from sectors where their negative environmental impact has been identified. Signatory structures call on governments to honor their commitments in the fight against climate change.

“We need governments to keep their commitment to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and act quickly to implement it,” the statement said, starting with the world’s most developed economies.

“This is an important initiative that underlines that we need to see 1.5° not as a target or something vague, but as a threshold for a livable world,” former Irish president Mary Robinson told reporters. Nelson Mandela brings together former leaders working for world peace.

The 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to below +2°C and, if possible, to +1.5°C.

Challenged by the G20

“This is for governments, those at the COP who have not yet raised their national ambitions as they promised in Glasgow, especially the G20 that meets next week”, explained Mary Robinson.

“It’s really important that governments start taking their responsibilities seriously to halve global emissions by 2030. This is crazy!” she exclaimed.

Maria Mendeluz, chief executive of the Climate Committed Business Alliance, emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear 1.5°C target to guide business. “Once you set a budget and a limit, you can deliver results,” she said.
