Six easyJet flights to or from Barcelona and eight others to or from Palma de Mallorca were canceled due to a pilot strike in Spain.
Fourteen international flights to or from Spain were canceled on Friday due to a strike by pilots of the country’s easyJet company, a union announced at the call of the movement. The strike comes on top of other social movements launched by other companies since the beginning of summer, in the middle of the tourist season and resuming operations after the Covid-19 pandemic. EasyJet’s Spanish pilots have decided to stop work every weekend in August, from Friday to Sunday.
The Spanish Union of Airline Pilots (Sepla) said a total of 14 cancellations had been recorded as of noon (1:30 p.m. Spanish time). Six of the affected flights were departing or arriving in Barcelona, while the other eight were departing from Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. Last week, 36 were canceled during the weekend strike. Pilots are calling for a return to their pre-pandemic working conditions and fresh talks around a new collective agreement.
Limited impact for Ryanair
The easyJet strike, in the middle of the high tourist season, comes on top of a strike by flight crews at another low-cost airline, Irish Ryanair, which has so far had a limited impact with more delays than cancellations. According to the USO union (Union Syndicale Ouvrière), the social movement of the cabin crew of Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary of the Spanish company, will last for ten days from August 28 to September 6.
