Runner faints after Brooklyn Half Marathon in New York | The world

A 30-year-old man who crossed the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday morning has collapsed and died, New York officials say.

The unidentified runner was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene, fire department spokesman Frank Dwyer said.

It is not clear what caused the crash, but a statement from the event, New York Road Runners, said the man began to feel sick after finishing the race.

“Our thoughts are with the runner’s family and those close to them,” said Trina Singian, a non-profit spokeswoman.

Singian explains that the medical team accompanied the participants throughout the competition. The group also observed weather conditions – New York City weather warning that high temperatures and high humidity could cause health problems.

By noon, Brooklyn had a low of 26.7 degrees Celsius. Organizers estimate that the race, which was attended by more than 22,000 runners, returned to full capacity for the first time in three years.

A spokesman for the local fire brigade said 15 runners had been hospitalized and four of them were in critical but not life-threatening condition. Others have minor injuries.
