Intel will invest heavily in Europe

On Tuesday, March 15, US semiconductor giant Intel announced that it would invest 80 billion euros in Europe over the next ten years. It is an effort “Historical”, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of the Silicon Valley Group, said: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Poland will benefit from the first wave of investment of 33 33 billion from projects in the microelectronics value chain.

This investment, supported by the European Union (EU) under its Chips Act (“Chip Plan”), forms the basis of a new habitat dedicated to semiconductors in Europe. The bridgehead for this deployment is located in Magdeburg, the capital of the Saxony-Anhalt region in Germany, which will host two large chip manufacturing factories. Seventeen billion euros will be set aside for this project. The former German Democratic Republic is expected to make the largest investment ever in the region. Planning is set to begin soon, with production expected to begin in 2027, subject to European Commission approval.

New factories will produce the latest generation of chips. The company estimates that the site will create the equivalent of 7,000 construction jobs, followed by 3,000 permanent direct jobs and thousands of additional indirect jobs within subcontracting companies and partners. The American group has also announced plans to invest 12 12 billion in a historic factory in Leiceslip, Ireland, to enable it to double its production capacity.

Finally, negotiations are underway in Italy for the construction of an assembly plant, the location of which needs to be defined. The planned investment would be 4.5 billion euros and would create 1,500 direct jobs at Intel. The group also plans to acquire the factory-operated tower semiconductor in Agret Bryanza, Italy, in partnership with Estimicro Electronics.

All of these projects should enable the semiconductor manufacturer to establish a significant presence in the region, which is seen as promising to produce chips on demand in Europe. In 2021, the group created a temporary division called Intel Foundry Services, which is intended exclusively for external orders. Further upstream, Intel announced its intention to strengthen its efforts in research, development and chip design, an essential link in the latest generation of microelectronics.
